Ron Cook, Ph.D.
Biosearch Founder, President & CTO

Ron Cook, Phd In 1980, Ron accepted his first oligonucleotide order for liquid phase synthesis of an unmodified 15-mer insulin probe. Unbelievably, it cost more than $10,000 and required almost 6 months to prepare less than 10 OD of material! Over the ensuing years, Dr. Cook and Biosearch have since been at the forefront of innovative advancements in automated DNA synthesis. Today the same insulin probe would cost a mere $30 and require less than a few hours to synthesize and purify. More recently, Dr. Cook and his team of Ph.D. researchers invented the Black Hole Quencher, CAL Fluor, Quasar and Pulsar families of quenchers and fluorophores for multiplex PCR. In particular, the BHQ® Dyes have effectively supplanted DABCYL and Tamra as quenchers for real-time, quantitative PCR probes. Learn More

multiplexing

The hot topic these days in quantitative, real-time PCR is multiplexing. Careful selection of spectrally resolved, thermocycler-compatible fluorophores and quenchers is an important first step in developing an optimized multiplex, real-time qPCR assay. Our applications group has rigorously evaluated our dyes on most major thermocycler platforms and is able to suggest optimal combinations of dyes. Learn More
