The 5Nitroind modification incorporates a 5-Nitroindole internally or at the 5' terminus of an oligonucleotide. 5-Nitroindole can be used as an effective universal base as it does not discriminate between the four natural nucleotide bases in duplex formation. In addition, as a hydrophobic aromatic compound, 5-Nitroindole stabilizes the duplex via base-stacking interactions.
